Mammoth Storm ~ Fornjot (2015)

Fornjot, the first full-length effort from Swedish power trio Mammoth Storm, firmly entrenches the band as bringers of DOOM!
Released on Napalm Records, the album opener Augurs Echo is an 11-minute-plus epic that builds off a sonic landscape created by guitarist Christer Ström before being joined by the concise, heavy, delivery of Emil Ahlman’s drums, and the powerful vocals of Daniel Arvidsson; also providing brontosaurus bass lines. The track shifts between an epic, doom march to vast horizons of sound, echoing the tragedy of lonely, barren northern lands.
Sumerian Cry is a fuzz-loaded battle march, suitable for combat via helicopter or horse. The trio slowly, builds up the attack mode before firmly switching the pace back to lumbering doom on the title track. According to legend, Fornjot is a giant and ruler of Finland, Kvenland, and Gotland. The power of the giant and the bleak landscape he rules over are well amplified in Fornjot.
Mammoth Storm creates its work in layers, moving the listener through heavy realms while never stopping the story from plowing ahead. Production on Fornjot is tight to say the least. This is professional doom to the max, helping cement Mammoth Storm as major player in the realms of doom and sludge.

Mammoth Storm - Rite Of Ascension (2014)

On their new two-track album, Mammoth Storm bring things down to a crushing level of submersion. Thick rumbling bass, tense growls of vocals, and well-developed heavy melodies keep things moving along, beginning with “Rite Of Ascension” and ending with “Obscure Horizon”. Really, it sounds like the soundtrack to a horde of bikers pouring out of the gates of Hell, as seen from a nearby mountain. For their first non-demo release, Rite Of Ascension shows plenty of promise; let's hope that this crew keeps at it, and releases more material quite soon.

Mammoth Storm - Self-Titled Demo (2013)

Oh those crazy Swedes. Always making their stoner doom slower, hazier and trippier.

When you first hear Mammoth Storm, it's almost as if you are hearing the soundtrack to a cult's march through the woods en route to a ritual sacrifice, or, perhaps, a solemn death march. Not too say that Mammoth Storm's music is necessarily depressing, but it sounds just that epic and grandiose. A sound that channels the best of euro death metal and slow-grinding sludge elements into nearly a half-hour of brutality that (maybe not so ironically) feels like a passing storm, wrecking everything in its path.

Buzzing guitars and simple, thudding drums pump along the band's early, three-track outing, leaving no argument to the fact that Mammoth Storm knows exactly what sort of music they want to create. From time to time, the fuzzed out melodies open up for impressive guitar solos and pedalwork, as well as eerie and haunting organ sections that create an almost Transylvanian-doom vibe. Ominous group chanting and sampled echoing also create interesting highlights on "Ancient Apocalypse," possibly the album's best track and musically impressive.

Although the work is early, it sounds clean and well-produced, especially for a three-song demo. Say what you will about Pro Tools and audio technology today, but when a band knows how to truly play (and play ti really fucking loud), that intensity shows and pays off when channeled live. Based on the raw talent and potential seen here, Mammoth Storm are poised to have a hell of a run in the metal world and I for one can't wait to hear a full album's worth of work.
