At Devil Dirt ~ Plan B: Sin Revolución No Hay Evolución

The update is a bit late today, so I'm going to keep thing short, sweet, and to the point. This Chilean duo seems to escape all normal classifications, let's just say that at times it's bordering on Psychedelic Doom Metal, and at others it could be considered ridiculously fuzzed out Stoner Rock, give it a little time and you're hit with a track that you could pass off as Doom Metal all day, whatever you feel like calling it, it's heavier than hell with a groove that slays. While every track is worth your time, my favorite was probably the incredibly catchy title track, "Sin Revolución No Hay Evolución". With guitar riffs as dark and fuzzy as my front-side, the song screams Black Sabbath with the initial vocals sounding like they were pulled straight from the 90's Grunge scene, but when the chorus kicks in, you wonder when the hell Paul McCartney joined the group. Being a dynamic duo, the only other instrumentation is the drummer, who pounds out his mid-tempo rhythm with a vicious precision. There are so many ways to get your paws on this  of fuzz, you don't have much of an excuse for not having a copy. You can head over to the group's bandcamp and get the digital version for a "name your price" deal, or pick up one of the last few CDs from them. Down Right Dirty...

At Devil Dirt - Chapter II "Vulgo Gratissimus Auctor" (2012)

There's no two ways about it, these guys have been one of the main reason's the blog's YouTube channel has received so many views. The tracks we put up from they're self titled debut have been some of, if not the most viewed since day one, and that should tell you a lot of what you need to know about At Devil Dirt. Quality musicians making quality music. But if you missed the coverage of their first release here, then I'll bring you up to speed - It's two guys from Chile producing fuzzy yet harmonic tunes. Thats the long and short of it really.
This, their follow up to last years release takes on a slightly less gritty sound and shape. Where the last album could generally be described as quite grungy Chapter II feel's somewhat more doom driven. There is still more fuzz than you can shake a stick at, but it's a lot more polished and for want of a better word, accurate. Just from listening to the opening couple of minutes you could swear that you're put on Crowbar by mistake. The slow, driven and impending doom remains an underlying factor that ties the whole record together throughout the duration. But the strange thing is the collaboration between that doom and the almost softly sang vocals. It's different and at first it does sort of catch you off guard. But if like me you don't warm to the pairing straight away just give it a little time and hear the album out. Before too long I'm sure the penny will drop and you'll realise they do actually work really well together. The key to Chapter II though is it's ferocious clash of dirty fuzzy riffs and pounding drums. With patches of tracks echoing seminal works from the likes of the Desert Sessions, Sleep, Kyuss and Dozer it really does still blow my mind that this is the work of just two guys. What this mite lack in fast paced or reverb ridden vocals (if thats what you're looking for) it more than makes up in shear talent of composition.
Either way y'all should really give the album a blast. If you dig it you'll be pleased to know that the guys have sorted a pretty limited pressing on wax, just 100 to be exact. Up for sale now on the Bandcamp page they'll should be shipping around this time next month, so move fast!

At Devil Dirt - Self Titled (2011)

Holy crap this is one hell of a dirty, fuzzed out monolith of an album! Don't misinterpret that as this being an ambient/drone kind of offering though, because you'd really be miles from the truth. It's got all that biblically monstrous fuzz akin to the kings of drone Sunn O))), but its also dripping in style and groove. It's like desert rock, played to a sludge tone with vocals somewhat reminiscent to that of some 90's psychedelic rock. The more I listen to this album the more it's strikes me as being utterly remarkable. The guys have managed to adopt a tone and tuning that Eyehategod would be envious of, command slow chugging riffs on a par with Sleep and tripped out hallowed vocal sound much like a bleak Alice In Chains. Oh, and when I say 'guys' I mean that in it's simplest of terms, because all this remarkable work and talent is the product of just two guys! It's almost beyond comprehension. Everything feels so layered, full and perfected despite there only being drums and one guitar, it's hard to believe there's just two of them.
If you don't mind the majority of the vocals being in Spanish (unless that does happen to be your native tongue) you should really dig this album. Hell, even if you are bothered by not being able to understand all the lyrics I guarantee that this album with still make your jaw drop. I barely understand a word of whats being sang but the pure furiously and aching groove that seeps out of every single second of this record is more than enough for me to whack it straight into our top 10 of 2011!

I urge you to not waste anymore time and head over to Corvus Distro and pick up a copy of the album on cd, not only because it's fantastically awesome but it's also limited to just 500 copies!
