Nothing To Be Ashamed Of...

The Lion's Daughter - Shame On Us All (2012)

The Midwest takes a bad wrap for pretty much everything under the Sun. I contest that when it comes to metal, however, St. Louis' scene is still strong and full of more rage than any posh "thrashers" from the coasts. There is plenty to be pissed about right here in America's Heartland, and Good Die Young Music's The Lion's Daughter is that aggression incarnate. Currently working on a new split with St. Louis folk outfit Indian Blanket, The Lion's Daughter continues to destroy on a fairly regular basis, mastering their unholy, unforgiving brand of sludge metal.
On Shame On Us All, the band rips through a solid offering of blistering drums, ripping guitars and devastating vocals that continuously crushes and nearly induces physical pain from sheer brutality. There is no slowing down with The Lion's Daughter, as each track gets louder and faster than the last, the band creates an impressive effort that could stand against any big name in the genre today. Given the talent and raw nature of the group, the music never truly shows any weak spots, simply working on a number of levels that adds a dark, 'we-don't-give-a-fuck' ethos.
Pain, suffering and human ignorance serves as a strong creative element for the group, fitting in line with the music that is nearly as grim. Despite the black cloud aesthetic, The Lion's Daughter is still a band that is fun in the metal sense. Offering up a cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Mr. Self Destruct" from the band's 1994 release The Downward Spiral, The Lion's Daughter places an interesting twist on an industrial classic that still speaks to millions of music fans across the world.
Energetic and looming, live performances are nothing short of an auditory riot. As the band continues to create and firm up their skills, they are looking toward a path that is sure to gain recognition amongst many outside of the St. Louis area. Given their next release is a split with a genre totally on the other end of the spectrum, The Lion's Daughter is clearly looking to combine their efforts with others they respect, despite a drastic difference in sound. It's this mindset that could just make the band more unique than even I suspect.
It should also be noted that the cover art for Shame On Us All is an original piece of work from St. Louis artist Coby Ellison, an extremely talented dude that will hopefully find himself featured on our new artists page in the near future.

Disease-Ridden and Infectious...

Plague Mask - The Frailty of Human Existence (2013)

Upstate New York can be a cold and unforgiving place. Almost as cold and unforgiving as Plague Mask, a grungy black metal outfit hailing from Syracuse that bares some serious fangs on their latest release. Although often blasting their way through each song, Plague Mask occasionally tip their hats to musical stylings akin to Norwegian death metal and prog rock. A unique blend of heavy riffs and spacey transitions make Plague Mask an intriguing band, one that knocks around the foundation of metal and rock, shaking loose a tough sound that stands up on both sides of the spectrum.
The most noticeable aspect of Plague Mask are the growling, animalistic vocals that seem to work just right despite any tempo change on the record. Slightly high-pitched, the vocals compliment the wailing, pedal-heavy riffs and blast-beat drumming. In the moments between lyrics, Plague Mask does not simply settle for repetitive hooks or rhythms. The band makes it a point to try something different at every turn. While some of these efforts fall a bit short or feel a bit tried, the overall effort is stronger for having the experimentation.
My favorite track off the EP, "Botched Swimming Lessons," is indicative of the range that Plague Mask is capable of and keeps a fast pace interspersed with odd breaks and tempo switches that call for head-banging and swaying at the same time. As quickly as it starts, the track ends, which is a little disappointing given the rest of the EP seems to possess tracks that aren't conformed to any sort of time limit by the band. Taking into consideration the band has an obvious flair for speed variation, "Botched Swimming Lessons" could simply be a work in progress or a song that the band truly feels works better at an unrelenting pace that screams pure brutality.
Suspecting the band has plenty of rage left in them, I am eager to hear a full-blown work from Plague Mask. One that will allow the band even more freedom to try out some sounds and speeds that can gradually turn into real rockers and thrashers. Either way, I'm listening when it arrives.

Moscow At 100 Degrees...

CSBR Experience - Feel The Heat (2013)

Wow, these guys are on the ball! Not only do these guys keep the Russian stoner scene alive by the means of magazines, a radio station, online stoner tv, scheduling gigs all over the country and putting up their own site, they also have started this band earlier this year, recorded this EP during summer and will be releasing it September 22nd. Oh, and did I mention their singer had no musical experience whatsoever? These guys..!
CSBR Experience (Crab Stoned But Rocking, a monniker ther truly deserve) go hard and go fast, very much like early stoner acts such as Slo Burn and Unida. In spite of a lack of desert, the tundra seems to be an excellent replacement for it because their EP, Feel The Heat, definitely has the desert feel, just with a little cool twist. The music's loud, groovy, catchy and dirty. Just like it should be.
Even though CSBR Experience hasn't even reached 1 on the age-o-meter, they already have a pretty solid sound that can be called their own. It definitely is no reinvention of the wheel, but who can blaim them as they've been playing only this long (short?). Anyway, what they're playing is still pretty common stoner rock, but it's their stoner rock, and most of all; it's good stoner rock. It's fun, it's loud, it's mean and it's stoned as a crab. I really do love saying that by the way.
Oh yeah, and remember that singer that had no experience at all before starting at this band? Yeah, he's killer.
It's a hell of a debut, and it's hella cheap (just 3 bucks) so just go and buy it. Yes, it's Russian and if you're one of those peeps boycotting anything Russian because of the anti-gay laws you're just a dick denying honest, hard working people a living. Not every Russian is a homophobe, so while it's perfectly fine to piss on Putin, don't piss on these guys. They deserve some praise.

Young Pups Howling Like Old Wolves...

Three Wolf Moon - Three Wolf Moon (2013)

Three Wolf Moon consists of members of the stoner/doom act Black Wizard, the punk band The Best Revenge and the experimental If We Are Machines. The common denominator that brings these bands together is something that most of us share; a love for 60's psychedelic rock. Now their debut is coming together (not sure when it'll be released though, information on this band is quite scarce, but they've already got some songs up on Bandcamp and sent us a full listen so it can't be long) and it's something else.
Something that goes a long way back, very early psychedelic rock, in some of the songs even some Bob Dylan-esque folk, not quite put in a modern jacket. It's so much like the golden era of rock my dad didn't even believe this wasn't made when he was a teen.
Even though their style may not be refreshing, Three Wolf Moon is definitely no copy of the classics. Their influences come straight from the 60's and 70's and their intentions don't pass that era, they don't sound like anyone else but Three Wolf Moon. They stand head and shoulders above the crowd of so many contemporary bands trying to sound vintage. Three Wolf Moon is a band from the 60's that's just not that old. Which should be great live, because these guys can actually still play. If only these guys didn't have computer skills like they were that old I'd be able to tell you when and where you could listen to their upcoming album, but hey; you gotta have something to work on.

Return Of The Witch...

Mountain Witch ~ Cold River (2013)

I must admit, I'd not planned to put this up until the whole album was actually available, but it was just too goddamn good to sit on, plus what better way to start your weekend than sit back and bathe in the warm sonic delights of Germanys finest doom trio?
When Renee told me Mountain Witch had once again reformed and he was hitting up the studio, to say I was excited was somewhat of an understatement. Both Scythe & Dead Horse and the Self Titled albums have pride of place within my record collection and rarely find themselves further than a foot away from my turntable. But that probably has something to do with the fact I possess two copies of both and the test presses, so you could really stand anywhere in my house and not be all that far from these guys. Yeah, I guess you could say I'm a a fan.
So the prospect of a brand new album, being backed by the good folks over at This Charming Man Records pleased me no end. But this was towards the start of the year and I've had to spend month after month eagerly awaiting the new cuts of inevitably fuzzy and retro German doom. So last week when I got a message to tell me to check out the new track I felt like a weight had been lifted. Months of anticipation had drawn to a close, and I just hoped that it would be the same caliber as the old material...
So whats new with the Witch? Well, pretty much everything to tell you the truth. Where the previous outings sort of straddled both the acid rock and dooms genres this new approach sees them step slightly away from the former and place a foot firmly in classic rock instead. Not to say that they've abandoned their acid rock roots entirely, hell no. That haunting groove and occult feel is still there in bucket loads, but now their sound focuses more towards that whole tone that Sabbath so beautifully crafted over four decades ago. It's darker, more somber and arguably more textured than before. There seems to have been a real and tangible progression in their song writing. To the point where you could be excused for mistaking them for and entirely different band altogether. Thats a pretty impressive feat being as they've managed to completely alter their sound without biting off more than they can chew, which is a hell of a rarity and seldom pays off when attempted by many a band. The other most noticeable aspect of this new material are the inclusion of vocals. Yeah, the past records had a smattering of lyrics here and there, but they were never really the focus and took more of a back seat behind the fuzz. Which worked great, as they flowed more fluidly along with the tempo and produced a beautifully eerie ambiance. But now they guys have really stepped up their game and given Renee a real front man status. It really does pay off too, as the same dark creepiness resonates through his lyrics as before but now they really work effortlessly to paint a picture for each song.
At the end of the day the chaps have taken a punt and tried something new and substantially different to their previous works, but it's worked fantastically! So if you, like me, were bitterly disappointed with Sabbath's 13 and just longed for them to return to their roots and crank out something gritty, dark and fundamentally old-school then you really should pick up Cold River because it ticks all those bloody boxes and more. It's bloody brilliant!

A True Emergence Amongst The Rubble...

Close The Hatch - To Collapse In Absentia (2013)

It is difficult to differentiate between what type of music an album strives to be and what it actually is upon completion. Blurred genre lines, self-labeling and artistic stubbornness make it nearly impossible for anyone to definitively look at an artist or any of their work and state with one-hundred percent assuredness that they are "X" sounding like "Y." Yet, amongst this uncertainty lies an even greater musical experiment that often results in something that sounds and feels so different that it makes the whole genre discussion seem silly and irrelevant. It is this type of music that makes listening worthwhile and meaningful, creating buzz that cannot be ignored.
In the case of Close The Hatch, the Ohio five-piece continuously ventures across the prog/metal line until a sound all its own emerges. Playing with numerous tempo changes and backed by a talented keys section, the band presents an airy, stargaze brand of rock that sometimes finds itself joined by the imposing sound of shouting and the flowing croon of talented singing. The end result is a fantastic four-track EP that could be considered music to fall asleep to, but that would guarantee a slight nightmare or two.
That's not to say that Close The Hatch tries to invoke fear, but the way in which their music leaves an impression is somewhat eerie (in the best sense). Knowing when to step up their sound and when to bring it to a near halt that leaves the listener hanging on for each note that will follow, Close The Hatch achieves near perfection on each song presented on the effort. Closing track "Kali" is perhaps the best example of Close The Hatch's dynamic: strong and brutal at first, but surprisingly mellow and moody until the end. Haunting guitar rhythms and light-hit drumming are standard fair in these lighter instances, but simply enhance without bogging down the overall vine of the album.
As I continue to listen to "To Collapse In Absentia," I feel as though I am hearing something new each time, for the first time, in a way. An interesting and impressive piece of work that will serve well for both prog and doom fans alike.

Revving Motors And Droning Voices...

Motordrone Self Titled (2013)

Ever heard a part of a song you liked so much you just repeated that over and over? Wishing the song just existed of that part and get you in a trance-like state? Then Motordrone might just be the thing for you, bacause that's basically their formula. And it works.
Motordrone works because of a surprising element of rock 'n' roll that's incorporated in their otherwise really drony music. It's much more goofish than other drone acts such as Sunn O))) (some of the song titles are; She's A Badass and I Did A 180 In My El Camino), and the drastic difference in length of the songs make it a lot lighter and easier to swallow. That said, it's not some drone for beginners either, for it is low, hard and repetitive. Longer songs just wouldn't work with Motordrone, and I'm glad they've adopted an average of about four minutes. Now there's enough variety in rythm and singing (they've got both a male and female singer, who both sing as stoic as can be, like they should, they play drone. But the change in voices is really one of the strongest points of Motordrone) to keep you interested.
How long they can keep you interested is a question though, I've listened the album a couple of times now, and I'm not getting bored, but every song follows the same formula; repetitive fuzzy riffs - two singers - harder repetitive fuzzy riffs. It's great fun to listen to, but I don't know how the band can keep this interesting in following albums, or mostly keep it interesting for themselves. But that's all worries for later, in the meantime let's just sit back, grab a beer and enjoy.

Return Of The Man...

Judd Madden ~ Glacial (2013)

He's back! Australia's one man instrumental doom prodigy has finally returned!
I've probably said it before, but it bares repeating. Judd is one of those guys you kinda, just wanna hate, for no other reason than the fact he's disgustingly talented. Seriously, six albums, forty four tracks, numerous demos, and that mother plays, mixes and masters bloody everything.
Any of you who have followed Madden's works over the last couple few years will have experienced his steady growth and progression from album to album, and Glacial is no different. It does to an extent take off from where Artesian ended, but he's slightly altered his approach to the whole dynamics of the album. Going back to similar style as Waterfall and crafting huge chunks of somber doom that exceed the 12-15 minute mark. It's all broken up nicely too, with the first couple of tracks building up to a nice volley of chugging riffs that bellow out in a subtly Scandinavia style before giving way to a sound that instantly reminded me of Isis's seminal Oceanic - dark, deliberate and brooding. It's all effortlessly effective, beautifully simple and quietly understated. Just like all of Judd's discography, it never tries to be too clever for its own good. Not that he couldn't pull that off, hell, he's like a young Trent Reznor. But sometimes it's the simple things that end up being the most effective and invoking... And that's why we bloody love him.

Cold-blooded Shredders...

Lizard Queen - Self-titled (2013)

It wasn't too long ago that I reviewed an Italian stoner band by the name of DEEP and their impressive debut titled Vol. 1. A grooved out and slower album, Vol. 1 was a lesson in how stoner rock can transcend a number of tempo and mood changes to achieve an eclectic yet fathomable sound. While DEEP spin-off Lizard Queen is much faster, riffier and more traditionally rock and roll than its origin band, the group is in no hurry to churn out quick burners that leave little impression on the listener. In the Lizard Queen camp, slow and steady wins the race.
A mix of simple drumming and distant, echoed vocals serve just fine on the effort, but the true talents lie in the album's guitars. Occasionally, repeated chords and verse work drag, but killer solos and some pedal experimentation help breathe life back into the majority of the tracks. Buzzy and noisy are descriptions best kept in mind when listening to the effort, but Lizard Queen are not as simple and one-dimensional when it comes to their music as those words may suggest. A heavy dose of finger-tapping notes appear under the effects of the pedals, but the practice pays off and maintains a sound that band can truly call their own. Bass playing on the effort is also a notable standout, never branching out into much complexity, but also embracing a fuzzed out tone that works alongside everything else going on at any given time on the record.
Recent years have seen an increase in stoner groups nodding to topics like ancient goddesses and epic half-men, half-monsters that rule other realms, and that's all fine and good, but Lizard Queen is strictly about getting down to brass tacks. Comparatively, Lizard Queen could be said to sound like a lot of bands, but that assessment would simply be cheating a talented act out of the respect they deserve on an early work that is something special.
As always, these are my humble opinions, so, please, check out Lizard Queen and let us know what you think.

Oldschool Ohioans...

Electric Citizen ~ Self Titled EP (2013)

Ok... Now don't base your judgement on the cover of this one. In fact, don't even look at it. It in no way does them justice. I know, at first glance it boasts a somewhat Manson family feel. Or should possibly be found sitting aside an article about a suicidal cult from the dark sordid wilderness of America's deep south... I think its the combination of soft focus and vignette... Hmmm...
Anyway, I'm getting off track here. But trust me when I say you're in for one hell of a retro treat with these Ohio psych rockers. Straight from the outset you're instantly cast back to a time where flared jeans reigned supreme, Ozzy still had the capability to string a sentence together and acid taken by those at Woodstock was still yet to wear off. Every single thing about this little gem of an EP wreaks of the late 60's/early 70's and whats more, it's all executed with that same retro feel and panache. If as a kid you grew up listening to your old man's record collection and have a deep seeded love of the old school you can't help but fall for Electric Citizen. What they've carved out here is their own little niche of dark psychedelica through a sort of bygone era. Spewing killer vintage riffs one after another and coupled with Laura's beautifully eerie tone of vocals it all comes together effortlessly into one hell of a tight piece of work. Although they've opted for the whole retro vibe, it still all manages to remain brilliantly unique... Think Kate Bush sings the songs of Black Sabbath and you'll get the jist. Now if any of our artistically skilled friends out their could knock them up some nice trippy art work ready for a full album, I think they'd be just about set. But for the time being, if you'd like to own this on the format it was truly made for you can hit up The Crossing and pre-order the double 7" for just $13!

Stars Technically Align...

Cerebrum - Cosmic Enigma (2013)

My return to reviewing European-based bands continues this week as I take a listen to Greek tech metal outfit Cerebrum (featuring Nile drummer George Kollias). While there's a ton going on in the band's second album, the meat and potatoes of it all revolves around mid- to late 90's thrash and tech metal that gave listeners blisters on their fingers just listening to it. There's something to be said about Cosmic Enigma in that it immediately gave me a sense of nostalgia from the opening riff, reminding me of all the great metal that got me into the bands I enjoy today. Along with the trip down memory lane, this record also did a great job of making me wish I had long hair so I could twirl that shit as each track hammered through my speakers.
From start to finish, metal fans will identify with Cerebrum on a lot of levels, namely through their constant use of tempo changes, blast beats and hoarse, commanding vocals. Hyper-shredding and finger-tapping keep the album moving at light speed with only two, brief instrumentals allowing for any sort of chance for anyone to catch their breath. Interesting segues pop up in a few standard tracks as well, sounding much like fuck-infused acid trips that are suddenly stabbed to death, lending way to the brutal tech elements that preceded them.
On the front half of the record, songs such as "Utopian Freedom, Dogmatic Truth" and "Dream Infusion Side Effects" maintain a double-bass groove overlaid with numerous guitar solos, screeching chords and drumming that sounds like a four-armed man is behind the skins. Latter tracks like "Enter The Void" and "Chaotic Orbits Align" rip and explode from second to second, unrelenting yet catchy in that way that only tech geniuses can create through their dedication to playing guitars in the most masterful of ways.
Cerebrum is certain to gain a lot of notice with Cosmic Enigma as it serves as not only a great, modern metal album, but also a piece of work that can be respected by metal fans young and old. Consider it a history listen that is best listened to at a ridiculous volume.
